Dirty Dancing

At Caroline's BBQ last Thursday... there were many topics of conversation. One which struck me, was Dirty Dancing and it's importance to woman around my age.

I remember seeing the movie when it came out on VHS. It didn't make an impression on me. All the girls at the BBQ were quoting this and that and singing all the songs: "having the time of my life!".

I didn't want to say it then but the only scene I remembered from that movie was the abortion scene. I guess I should see it again.

Apparently, all I need to know to understand women is: Dirty Dancing and Sex in the City. That scares me. I don't understand them. Sex in the City was explained to me by Véro as: If you take away the incredible jobs, amazing clothing, and (something else that I've forgotten): That's what girls are really like.

In an effort to understand the Dirty Dancing phenomenon better, I read Why Dirty Dancing is the best girl movie ever. It helped. If you only remember the abortion scene from Dirty Dancing, this may be required reading for you too...

I agree. It is the ideal chick flick because it gives girls who don't see themselves as beautiful (virtually all girls) a hope that somehow...some way...some smolderingly hot guy will notice them and want them and them alone. *sigh* Yes, it's far-fetched and asinine...but hey, it's Dirty Dancing!

Watching that made me want to cry and dance and meet the man of my dreams all at once. This is really the best girl movie EVER!!! Once you get this and Sex and the city (it's And, and not In), you get girls. But you know what? Understanding these two things is not as easy as you think. If ever you need an interpreter, give me a call.

I think Michelle says it all! Hm. Being the one who, against all odds, takes the hot guy's breath away... I think women aspire to be confident and independent like Carrie from 'Sex and The City', but deep down there's a little bit of the insecure chick with the big hair from 'Dirty Dancing' in all of us. Hey, Big picked Carrie in the end, didn't he...

Dirty Dancing is an ok movie for its time.

But please don't assert that by understanding Sex in the City (which is only sometimes entertaining but always borderline pathetic) we men will understand women. That's just plain bullshit; we'll NEVER understand women. :-)
